Illinois is one of the fifty states that, together with Washington D. C., make up the United States. Its capital is Springfield and its most populated city, is Chicago. It is located in the Midwest region of the country, Northeast Central Division, bordered to the north by Wisconsin, to the northeast by Lake Michigan, to the east by Indiana -part of this boundary is formed by the Wabash River-, to the southeast and south by the Ohio River that separates it from Kentucky, and to the west by the Mississippi River that separates it from Missouri (to the southwest) and Iowa (to the northwest). With 12 671 824 inhabitants in 2019, it is the sixth most populous state, behind California, Texas, Florida, New York, and Pennsylvania. It was admitted to the Union on December 3, 1818, as the 21st state.
About 65% of the state’s population lives in the Chicago metropolitan area, one of the largest industrial and financial centers in the world, the second largest industrial center in the country – after Los Angeles – and the second largest financial center in the United States – after New York.
Despite the fact that Illinois has a highly diversified economy, being one of the main financial centers in the United States, and a highly industrialized state, as of the 2008-2010 economic crisis the state is in technical bankruptcy with a debt of more than 5 billion dollars and without meeting the payments for basic services.4
Geographically, Illinois is characterized by its generally low-lying terrain and unstable climate. Agriculture is a major source of Illinois’ income. Tourism and the provision of transportation and telecommunications services are other important sources of income in the state. Chicago is the state’s largest city and one of the most dynamic rails and airport hubs in the United States.
Illinois is known for its large and diverse population and its balance of rural areas, small industrial cities, sprawling suburbs, and a large metropolitan area, Chicago. Its diverse economy and central position have made it a major transportation hub for 150 years. It is this mix of factories and farms, of urban and rural areas, that makes Illinois a microcosm within the nation.
Illinois’ nickname is The Prairie State, which means “The Prairie State.” Another nickname is The Land of Lincoln; many of its residents take pride in the fact that U.S. President Abraham Lincoln spent most of his life in the state. His grave is located in Springfield.
The first Europeans to explore the region of present-day Illinois were French missionaries. This region was part of New France until 1763 when it came under British rule. In 1783, after the end of the American War of Independence in 1776, it became part of what was then called the Northwest Territory. On February 3, 1809, the Illinois Territory was created. On December 3, 1818, Illinois became the 21st state of the United States.
